The hostel we had booked turned out to be excellent, a very homely atmosphere. The people who looked after the hostel sat with you whilst having breakfast and were genuinely interested in talking with you.
View from the outside:
At the hostel we got talking to a German couple who gave us very good information and where to go in Thailand and mentioned that we should go to Laos. Sorry I forgot their names…if you guys read this please comment and remind me!
After checking out we had a look around Cambria. As Halloween is fast approaching, the town had scarecrows all around, part of their scarecrow festival. Some of them were very strange!
The town has a population of around 6,000 (as of 2010) and is home to mainly retired affluent couples. With plenty of restaurants and art galleries, which were not cheap you would have to be in the money to live here! Even gas was around $5 a gallon, where as in San Fran we were paying $3.75 a gallon!
Yes, still in the USA!
The town is worth seeing and is great fun!
After visiting downtown, we walked back to the car, on the way a couple asked us if the colour of our turban had any meaning, we informed them and also told them a bit about Sikhism, they enjoyed expanding their mind especially as they did not know about our religion. Afterwards we picked up the car and drove to Moon Stone Beach (5 minutes drive) it was a very nice beach with a calm Pacific Ocean. Where we had parked was slightly crowded so we went down a bit further to a quieter area. The temperature was around 75 degrees F, cool for me, I am still used to the heat of New Mexico!
After spending some time walking along the coastline and viewing the large birds, we came to a nice hotel which has a golf course, as we were walking to the hotel reception we met a couple called Daryl and Karen, they were friendly and explained they had been visiting the hotel for a number of years. They then asked why we wear a turban, Sangeet gave a nice explanation of the turban and Sikhi. I butted in by saying we do not convert people! Karen explained to us about Christianity and said the only way to God is through Jesus Christ…….she told us to read the bible. We could have spent a few hours conversing but we finished up after about 30 minutes and moved on to enquire at the reception about the golf.
At the reception we asked how much is the room? The receptionist responded saying “too expensive!!!” (meaning too expensive for a pair of cash strapped looking backpackers?!!) Turned out the room was $125 per night….playing golf was only for hotel residents.
Daryl and Karen told about a very quiet spot over looking the beach just across from the hotel. We walked over and it was very nice.
We headed south on interstate 101 then west on 46 to a town called Cambria. Booked into the HI Bridge Street Inn. (HI – Hostel International)
It was getting dark as we started the 4 hour journey only stopping once for gas. We arrived at the hostel around 9:45. The hostel actually closes at 9pm, so we managed to locate free wifi (it was at a Marriott hotel!) and Skype called the hostel to let them know we will be late. They said do not worry we will pin the door key and your room key to the outside door! Amazing how relaxed people are in the smaller towns…….

After checking out of the motel we drove to the San Jose Gurdwara,
3636 Murillo Ave
San Jose , CA 95148
Gurdwara contact: Mohinder Singh Bajwa
Office Phone Number: (408) 274-9373
Office Fax Number: (408) 274-3712
We drove up the drive to see a magnificent Gurdwara. To see a Gurdwara like this in America was a great sight.
First glimpse of the Gurdwara whilst driving up the drive:
After bowing before the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, we had lungar.
We walked around the Gurdwara and were amazed at the fantastic craftsmanship. The lawns were manicured and there was parking for a lot of cars (with cover!) The darbar sahib can hold 2500 people.
“The Sikh Gurdwara San Jose was founded in the Early Eighties by former president Jit Singh Bainiwal and Teja Singh, and late Baba Pyara Singh Obhi..
Jit Singh Bainiwal, Teja Singh, and late Pyara Singh Obhi along with the other dedicated sevadars from the community founded the Sikh Gurdwara San Jose in 1984. The South Bay Sikh Community was growing rapidly and there was an urgent need for a local Gurdwara for the congregation to attend. Initially the Gurdwara held smagam’s at a local community center. In 1986 after enormous obstacles the Gurdwara Committee purchased a small building on White Road. Within a few months the Gurdwara Committee realized that the building was too small for Sangat. In 1990 the Gurdwara Committee purchased a parcel of land at 2785 Quimby Road, and then bought other two adjacent parcels over the next few years, which brought the total land owned by Gurdwara to about 5 acres. In 1993-94 the Gurdwara Committee under the leadership of Jit Singh Bainiwal and Bhuphindar (BOB) Singh Dhillon along with other committee members determined that it would not be efficient due to the future growth of the Sadh Sangat. Keeping things in perspective the resident’s surroundings and the future needs of a larger Divan Hall and parking for the sadh Sangat was a must. There were also City and County requirements that would not have met the needs of the Gurdwara.
Mr. Bhuphindar Singh Dhillon’s vision came a reality after looking at many properties Bob Dhillon the current General Secretary found our current home which is located at 3636 Murillo Avenue. The property is located in the Evergreen Hills of San Jose, California. This property sits on forty acres and has beautiful views of the bay and city lights at night. This will be the largest Gurdwara in North America.
The First phase was completed in 2004 with the entire infrastructure for 12 Million Dollars. The Second Phase is now completed with cost of 20 Million Dollars. Bhupinder Singh Dhillon along with the current committee member are thankful for all of the support of the Sadh Sangat to make this the most beautiful Gurdwara in the world. ”
After visiting the Gurdwara we drove up to the hills behind it, what amazing views, the houses had amazing gardens as well as great views.
After spending some time around the Gurdwara we headed to downtown San Jose (Silicon valley). There we visited the excellent tech museum. It is mainly for children but it is also great for adults. We are always learning so it is nice to visit. Also it is a great trip down memory lane especially seeing the first computers that were sold to the public.
We managed to find street parking outside the museum which cost us $2 for two hours. The car parks charged anywhere from $6 to $10 for day parking.
Afterwards we visited Apple head office in Cupertino (west of San Jose) the office covers many acres and it has a very good vibe. We went to the apple shop which mainly sold clothing as well as IPads and IPods (no discounts!)
As Steve Jobs passed one year ago here is a message from Apple:
“A message from Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.
Steve’s passing one year ago today was a sad and difficult time for all of us. I hope that today everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place.
One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our values originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.
I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing, delivering products that our customers love and dreaming up new ones that will delight them down the road. It’s a wonderful tribute to Steve’s memory and everything he stood for. – Tim”
I forgot to mention, yesterday after visiting downtown Sacramento, we passed a clothes shop. Sangeet went in, as she saw something nice. The lady was very keen to sell the dress, she asked Sangeet to try it on and kept saying “so cute” it was funny at first but got annoying after the tenth time!! She became so desperate she offered to knock off 20%, Sangeet asked if it was polyester? The lady said “NO it is silk, nowadays they make silk feel like polyester!!!” The label said it was polyester!!
Seems like as the world is tightening its belt, people will say/do anything to make a quick buck!
I have also wanted to see Silicon Valley also to enquire what jobs they have out here. We needed accommodation, therefore required wifi to check, found a Barnes and Noble book store to browse for accommodation.
The rates around San Jose are fairly high and not the back packer rates! Luckily Sangeet found a Comfort Inn, 1071 E. El Camino Real. Sunnyvale, CA 94087. The rate was reasonable. So have settled in for the night…..
