Walnut Gurdwara…..

Walnut Gurdwara…..

This morning we visited Sri Singh Sabha Walnut, this Gurdwara Sahib was established in 2008 to address the growing Sangat’s needs in the Los Angeles and Orange County of Southern California. The constitution and guiding principles of the Gurdwara align with the Akal Takht, and to a strong commitment to developing the youth into Sikhi and the future. It is registered as a non-profit religious corporation in California.

There was a nice atmosphere.

Having a wander…..

Whilst Sangeet was having a rest, I had a walked to the shops around Robertson and Pico (areas of LA) It was nice to people watch, also I would stop outside Starbucks to regularly check my emails and iMessages!

When I got back to the house, we headed out to the Gurdwara on Preuss and stayed there for around thirty minutes, it has such a fantastic vibration!

Some history on the Gurdwara/ ashram:

Arriving in Los Angeles in 1968, Yogi Bhajan began his mission to share the teachings of Kundalini Yoga, and to help people live healthy, happy and holy lives. He first established Guru Ram Das Ashram as a yoga center in West Hollywood, and it was here in Los Angeles that Kundalini Yoga in the Western World was born.

In the spring of 1972, we moved to the current location, a former chiropractic and hydrotherapy office, where it was established as a formal Gurdwara.

Yogi Bhajan lived at Guru Ram Das Ashram until the early 1980s. He resided in the small living quarters in the back, joined by his wife, children and staff. In that humble living room countless came for his guidance, the Khalsa Council was born, both spiritual and world leaders have been welcomed and our babies were named.

What is now our gurdwara with marble floors, then served as a sadhana room and gurdwara in the morning, yoga centre by day, and is where Yogi Bhajan, the Siri Singh Sahib, sat and taught classes two nights a week for over 15 years.

He continued to share his teachings with the Sadh Sangat (holy congregation) here for many years until his passing in 2004. Yogi Bhajan said, “I am here to serve anyone who says ‘Sat Nam,’ even once.”

Guru Ram Das Ashram is a sacred place, where for over 35 years people of all walks of life have come to be healed, to meditate, to bow to Guru, and to find peace. The walls of Guru Ram Das Ashram now resonate with the vibration of over 1900 Akhand Paths that have taken place on a weekly basis since those early days, and the chanting, prayer and divine Kirtan from gurdwara services that have been held here 365 days a year since its inception. Countless individuals have come to partake of the Guru’s langar that has been served daily since the mid-1980s.

By Guru’s grace, all of these traditions continue, with daily gurdwara and kirtan, langar, meditation, seva and weekly akhand paths. Literally the birthplace of Sikh Dharma International, Guru Ram Das Ashram in Los Angeles truly is, to us, the “Golden Temple of the West.”

San Luis Obispo (SLO)…..

San Luis Obispo (SLO)…..

After a great time on the moon stone beach. We headed south on Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway). State Route 1 (SR 1) is a major north-south state highway that runs along most of the Pacific coastline of the U.S. state of California. Highway 1 has several portions designated as either Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), Cabrillo Highway, Shoreline Highway, or Coast Highway. Its southern terminus is at Interstate 5 (I-5) near Dana Point in Orange County and its northern terminus is at U.S. Highway 101 (US 101) near Leggett in Mendocino County. Highway 1 also at times runs concurrently with US 101, most notably through a 54-mile (87 km) stretch in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, and across the Golden Gate Bridge.
The highway is famous for running along some of the most beautiful coastlines in the USA, leading to its designation as an All-American Road. In addition to providing a scenic route to numerous attractions along the coast, the route also serves as a major thoroughfare in the Greater Los Angeles Area, the San Francisco Bay Area, and several other coastal urban areas.
SR 1 was built piecemeal in various stages, with the first section opening in the Big Sur region in the 1930s. However, portions of the route had several names and numbers over the years as more segments opened. It was not until the 1964 state highway renumbering that the entire route was officially designated as Highway 1. Although SR 1 is a popular route for its scenic beauty, frequent landslides and erosion along the coast have caused several segments to be either closed for lengthy periods for repairs, or re-routed further inland.

After around 45 minutes we arrived at a town called San Luis Obispo (SLO)

San Luis Obispo ( Spanish for St. Louis, the Bishop of Toulouse) is a city in California, located roughly midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the Central Coast. Founded in 1772 by Spanish Fr. Junípero Serra, San Luis Obispo is one of California’s oldest communities. The city, locally referred to as San Luis, SLO, or SLOw Town (as its county is also referred to as SLO) is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County and is adjacent to California Polytechnic State University. The population was 45,119 at the 2010 census.

Renee:

6 Oct 2012 14:41

As we entered the restaurant, I asked Renee if they taught Kundalini Yoga in SLO, she said there is a class but some distance away. I am still puzzled as to why I asked this question, I have never asked it before. I told her that Sangeet and I are teachers, Renee got excited and asked “do you live in SLO or nearby, I have been wanting to practice Kundalini yoga and found it difficult to find a teacher close by” We said unfortunately not, we did offer to teach her Sat Kriya.

For information on Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan:

“Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan® is considered the most comprehensive of yoga traditions, combining meditation, mantra, physical exercises and breathing techniques; it is a Raj Yog, encompassing the eight limbs of yoga into a singular practice of excellence and ecstasy. “Kundalini” literally means “the curl of the lock of hair of the beloved.” This poetic metaphor alludes to the flow of energy and consciousness that exists within each of us, and enables us to merge with – or “yoke” – the universal Self. Fusing individual and universal consciousness creates a divine union, called “yoga.” The Upanishads, dating back to the fifth century B.C., describe the kundalini, although the oral tradition reaches back even further into history. For thousands of years, this sacred science and technology was veiled in secrecy, passed along verbally from master to chosen disciple.”

Sangeet ordered the Bhakti bowl and I had the burger. The food and service is out of this world! Although the restaurant says vegetarian and vegan….it is so not to scare the vegetarians who have not made the transition to veganism. As we were eating for our lunch the restaurant got busier, so unfortunately we were unable to teach Sat Kriya. I offered to email Renee the details.

6 Oct 2012 14:57

We then HAD to try desserts, well we might as well do a proper review!!

6 Oct 2012 15:40

Both desserts were gluten free as well as being vegan they tasted fabulous!

Sat Kriya:

Sat Kriya is one of the most powerful kriyas Yogi Bhajan taught. It is an entire Yoga Kriya (set) in one exercise (combining posture, mudra, movement and of course mantra).

Sat Kriya is a key part of Kundalini yoga. Beginners can start by practising it for 3 minutes a day. Its effects are numerous.

I will write more on this and explain how Sat Kriya is performed……

After a great meal, we had a wander around downtown SLO, we first came to this town in 2005 and is has become a lot busier.

As we had only paid for two hour ($1) street parking we decided to head back to the car and continue the journey. We got back onto highway 1 and continued south, now some of highway 1 goes inland, so in order to cover more distance in shorter time we decided to go east and get onto the interstate 101 (later, interstate 101 and highway 1 merge and hug the coastline.) There are a number of vista points, which have fantastic views of the ocean.

6 Oct 2012 17:58

We were looking out of the vista point and could see dolphins playing, it was a fantastic sight.

Right back onto highway 1……

We went through a town called Pismo, which made me chuckle, I kept saying it whilst driving all the way through town!

Cambria…..

Cambria…..

The hostel we had booked turned out to be excellent, a very homely atmosphere. The people who looked after the hostel sat with you whilst having breakfast and were genuinely interested in talking with you.

At the hostel we got talking to a German couple who gave us very good information and where to go in Thailand and mentioned that we should go to Laos. Sorry I forgot their names…if you guys read this please comment and remind me!

After checking out we had a look around Cambria. As Halloween is fast approaching, the town had scarecrows all around, part of their scarecrow festival. Some of them were very strange!

The town has a population of around 6,000 (as of 2010) and is home to mainly retired affluent couples. With plenty of restaurants and art galleries, which were not cheap you would have to be in the money to live here! Even gas was around $5 a gallon, where as in San Fran we were paying $3.75 a gallon!

6 Oct 2012 11:11

The town is worth seeing and is great fun!

After visiting downtown, we walked back to the car, on the way a couple asked us if the colour of our turban had any meaning, we informed them and also told them a bit about Sikhism, they enjoyed expanding their mind especially as they did not know about our religion. Afterwards we picked up the car and drove to Moon Stone Beach (5 minutes drive) it was a very nice beach with a calm Pacific Ocean. Where we had parked was slightly crowded so we went down a bit further to a quieter area. The temperature was around 75 degrees F, cool for me, I am still used to the heat of New Mexico!

After spending some time walking along the coastline and viewing the large birds, we came to a nice hotel which has a golf course, as we were walking to the hotel reception we met a couple called Daryl and Karen, they were friendly and explained they had been visiting the hotel for a number of years. They then asked why we wear a turban, Sangeet gave a nice explanation of the turban and Sikhi. I butted in by saying we do not convert people! Karen explained to us about Christianity and said the only way to God is through Jesus Christ…….she told us to read the bible. We could have spent a few hours conversing but we finished up after about 30 minutes and moved on to enquire at the reception about the golf.

At the reception we asked how much is the room? The receptionist responded saying “too expensive!!!” (meaning too expensive for a pair of cash strapped looking backpackers?!!) Turned out the room was $125 per night….playing golf was only for hotel residents.

Daryl and Karen told about a very quiet spot over looking the beach just across from the hotel. We walked over and it was very nice.

Sacramento…..

Sacramento…..

Driving south to Sacramento we passed gorgeous golden fields, you can tell this is a very big farming area.

This is a vegan cafe and a lot of options are gluten free. Sangeet had the California Burger, which she enjoyed very much! I had a cupcake (I had a big lungar at the Gurdwara earlier!) which was gluten free and vegan. It was amazing and I was hooked on them! The staff are very friendly and the service is good.

Afterwards we walked to the Capitol building which was about ten blocks away. You would never notice as the city is flat – walking feels so easy. The temperature was around 85 degrees f which for me was good.

The Capitol building is amazing and the grounds around it are so pristine. On the way back to the car we passed through the Capitol buildings gardens, they had the amazing Redwoods and other trees/plants which were all labeled, and some interesting shops. The atmosphere in Sacramento is really relaxed – nice city.

Orange tree in the park!

Instead I was in heaven and stocked up, Sangeet only bought a yoghurt (just to keep me company)! I bought hummus, cookies and crostini.

We got back to the car and headed south on Interstate 5, west on 580 and then south on 680 to San Jose (silicon valley!)

Acarta…..

Acarta…..

After leaving Trinidad we headed south on 101 to a university town called Acarta. As soon as you enter the downtown area you can see that the hippy generation is very much alive here. We drove a couple of blocks when all of a sudden somebody shouts SAT NAAM! That just felt so amazing to hear, I did not know who it was but shouted Sat Naam back!

20121003-103417.jpg

We needed some cash so drove to Chase bank, unfortunately they charged $3 per transaction so we declined and carried on exploring the downtown area by car.

Sangeet remembers there was a vegetarian cafe in town, as we could not find it we decided to drive the two hours to a town called Redding, then all of a sudden the cafe was on the corner! As we were both pretty full we decided to park up and ‘just’ look at the menu.

The cafe is called Wildflower
Fine vegetarian cuisine
1604 G St
Acarta
California
CA 95521

Tel +1 707 822 0360

After ‘just’ looking at the menu, we decided to sit down and order some food, well we might as well review it now that we are here!

Sangeet ordered a scrambled tofu and I had Eric’s favourite, a burger consisting of grilled tofu, portobello mushroom and onions. Both meals were fantastic!!

Afterwards we started our journey to Redding, taking the 101 north then 299 east. The drive was amazing and we drove through Trinity national park. What spectacular views!
